5 Questions to answer when reflecting on the first 30 days in a new job

Congratulations on your new job! It's exciting to start a new adventure, but it can also be overwhelming as you adjust to a new environment, learn new tasks, and meet new people (so many people!). It’s normal to feel like you’ve bitten off more than you can chew during this transition period, but don't let it get you down. Instead, focus on all the progress you've made in these first few weeks and take some time for self-reflection to celebrate your achievements.

Here are five questions to answer when reflecting on your new job:   

1. How do you feel about your role? 

Consider, is this the job you thought you were taking? Do you have all the information you need, or do you know where and who to get information from if you don't?

It's important to be honest about your feelings and address any concerns or uncertainties you may have early. If you don't have all the necessary information for you to perform your role, you’ll want to prioritise figuring out how to fix this and how to ask for help. 

2. What skills have you gained? 

What have you learned in the last 30 days? This is a chance to reflect on your progress and the things you've picked up on so far. Think about the skills and knowledge you've gained and any new perspectives or insights you've earned.

It's also important to consider whether you're asking enough questions. Asking questions is a key part of learning and adapting to a new role, so don't be afraid to ask for clarification or more information if you need it. Get crystal clear on what’s expected of you and your team, the biggest obstacles facing your team, and what you can be doing to be of most help. 

3. What have you learned about yourself? 

Another aspect of self-reflection is considering what you've learned about yourself. What has surprised you about yourself in the last 30 days? Have you discovered any new strengths or weaknesses? This can help you understand how you work best and what to focus on going forward. 

4. Do you have the support you need? 

Strong communication is crucial in any job. Have you been communicating with your leader and team enough? Do you have the support and guidance you need? Is there anything else you need from them?

It's important to establish open communication lines and be proactive in seeking the help you need. 

5. What are your goals and aspirations? 

Finally, think about what you want the next 30 days to look like and how you want to feel at the end of them. What are your goals and aspirations for this period? What could you do better in the next 30 days?

Reflection allows you to double down on what you're doing great, and correct the things that need fixing. By setting clear goals and intentions, you can make the most of the next 30 days and continue to grow and learn in your new role while making a solid impression on your team. 

Starting a new job can be a challenging and exciting experience, but with a bit of self-reflection and some careful planning, you can maximise your success. Remember to be honest about your feelings, continue asking questions and seeking guidance, and set clear goals for yourself.
